Song: Nothing is ever what it seems
Flynn has lost his faith in the world and spends endless hours watching Hitchcock films. To cope with his loneliness he creates an alter-ego; a 1940s private eye. He is convinced that a neighbour across the street is leading a double life as every morning she disguises herself and wears a wig. He nicknames her Judy, after the femme fatale in Vertigo. Scottie, his flat mate warns him to stay away but his obsession takes him out of the safety of his home to follow her and find out the truth.

While tailing Judy, Flynn suffers a panic attack at the city train station and has to stop in order to recover. He thinks that he has lost her, but hears her voice coming from the station café where she works. Moving closer, he overhears her talking to Ida, her boss, and how she believes she was being followed. Ida suggests it could be a mysterious admirer.
Song: Let your heart sing

In her break, Judy leaves the café and sits on a platform bench holding a train ticket. She looks sad. Instead of catching a train Flynn follows her onto the roof of the station where he sees her jump. Without investigating and in shock he returns home. Later he sees Judy in the window of her apartment and wonders if he is losing his mind! Scottie again warns him about getting involved with dangerous women.

The following morning he returns to the scene but there is no sign of an incident. While walking through the station he sees Judy again, sat on the platform and joins her on the bench. She tells him that she knows who he is and that he has been following her. Flynn is mortified. She dares Flynn to go with her and heads back again to the station roof, only to see her jump a second time.

In shock he walks to the edge expecting to see a body, but instead discovers Judy sat on a wide ledge looking out to the city. To his surprise she invites him to sit and says that she feels alive up here. Judy talks incessantly while Flynn remains quiet. She leaves him sat with his own thoughts and returns to the café. Flynn feels strangely liberated.

That evening, while watching a Hitchcock film Flynn is interrupted by a knock at the door, it is Judy. To Scotties annoyance she invites herself in and insists they watch the film together, stating she loves Hitchcock. Flynn is convinced that she is there to confront him about his stalking and blurts it out. Judy is hurt. She thought they had a connection. Things get awkward.

To remedy the situation she suggests they play a game; Flynn is worried. She asks which character he would love to be from a Hitchcock film. They have a blast together and connect. Without thinking Judy invites him to dinner on the roof of their building and in the heat of the moment Flynn accepts. Song: Rock your little world

The following evening Judy is preparing for their dinner date and trying on dresses. She wonders if he likes her, but convinces herself that he doesn’t. As she is leaving her apartment she decides not to wear her wig and go as herself. Something she hasn’t done in months. On the roof terrace she sits and waits, he is late.

When a nervous Flynn arrives, Judy is anxious, withdrawn and not herself. She can see that Flynn is confused by the way she looks and all she wants to do is run away. Flynn explains how he struggled to leave his apartment and knows exactly how she feels. They share stories together and find strength from each other. Judy tells him how she hates who she is and pretends to be someone that people will like. Flynn takes her hand and they dance on the roof till late into the night. Song: A place for us to go

A drunk but happy Flynn returns to his apartment, Scottie is not impressed. He tells him to get real and not to get his hopes up. In contrast, Ida is excited to see Judy and wants to know all about her date. Flynn’s happiness comes crashing down when he listens to a voice message from his brother, telling him that his ex girlfriend is back in town. Horrible memories of an abusive relationship come flooding back and he loses all self confidence again.

A week goes by. Ida tells her customers how unhappy Judy is as she hasn’t heard anything from Flynn. She notices a man sitting quietly on a bench and guesses that its Flynn. Sitting with him she introduces herself and tells him not to throw what he has with Judy away. She tells him a story about a lost love and persuades Flynn to ask Judy out on another date. Song: So Crazy In front of all the café customers, Flynn asks Judy out again. She accepts.

It’s a lovely day as they sit in the city park having a picnic. They are people watching and notice a couple arguing. Judy opens up and tells Flynn about her past and an abusive relationship she had. Flynn wants to tell her about his but can’t. Song: No One heard my voice

They dance to the music at a bandstand, getting closer and forgetting all their anxieties, until someone from Flynn’s past interrupts them. It is his ex-partner Evie, who ridicules Flynn for making a fool of himself and belittles Judy for her fashion sense. Judy confronts her and asks why she is being so offensive, and is shocked to find out who she is, and by Flynn’s inability to stand up for himself. Evie pushes Judy away and her wig falls off, leaving her exposed and defenceless. Evie and her friends laugh at her, but instead of withdrawing, Judy lambastes Evie and puts her to shame. Flynn, feeling humiliated and angry leaves without her, and returns to his apartment.

Flynn is devastated and ashamed by what happened. To his surprise Scottie tells him how brave he has been, and how far he has come. He tells Flynn that he is much stronger than he thinks, and doesn’t need his alter-ego or him anymore. Scottie, we learn, is a figment of his imagination. His parting advice to Flynn is to get Judy back.

He returns to the café but Judy is not there. Ida explains that Judy is about to leave on a train and it’s a one way ticket. If he’s quick he may catch her. Judy is waiting on the platform, looking dejected and sad. Flynn sits on the other end of the bench while Judy tries to ignore him. It is then that he opens up tells her about his own emotionally abusive relationship, and how he lost all self worth. Judy is moved. He tells her how much she means to him and what she did was the bravest thing he has ever seen.

The train pulls in and Judy asks him to go with him, to go to a place together where they can be happy. Flynn overcomes all his fears and accepts. Holding hands, they both board the train together.
